Living in England, miles away from Madrid, football became a passage into other places, other histories, and friendships I would not otherwise have found.
01Liverpool / Madrid
Between two cities
Beyond Atlético, Klopp’s Dortmund — and later Liverpool — left a profound mark on me. Their spirited play was magnetic. That influence was part of what drew me to the University of Liverpool in 2016.
Following football from England did not make Madrid feel less important. It made the journey between places part of the experience itself.
02Anfield
The people beside me
My travels took me to the streets of Liverpool, the historic landscapes of Madrid, and other European cities. Each destination brought matches, but more importantly, it introduced me to people who became friends.
This photograph is one of the fragments I have kept from Anfield: a scarf held above the away end, and a night still waiting to be written down in full.
